Turkey earthquake activity: Adana tremor and Istanbul fault analysis

A 5.0 magnitude earthquake struck the Saimbeyli district of Adana at 04:02, occurring at a depth of approximately 7 kilometers. The tremor was felt in Adana, Kahramanmaraş, Osmaniye, Kayseri, and Gaziantep, though no immediate negative impacts were reported. Dr. Mehmet Tatar, President of the Adana Branch of the Chamber of Geological Engineers, noted that such earthquakes are expected due to the ongoing energy accumulation following the February 2023 earthquakes. He warned that aftershocks will continue as faults trigger one another, emphasizing that building safety is the primary factor in preventing casualties.

In a separate seismic assessment regarding Istanbul, seismologist Prof. Dr. Osman Bektaş proposed a new hypothesis concerning the 150-kilometer seismic gap of the Main Marmara Fault. Bektaş suggested that the fault may not be a single, completely locked structure as commonly feared. Instead, he posits it could be a segmented system that releases tension through smaller earthquakes (below magnitude 7) and creep movements, rather than solely accumulating stress for a single massive event.
