Izmir earthquake anniversary: Experts warn of new seismic risks

Six years after the 6.6 magnitude earthquake near Seferihisar on October 30, 2020, which killed 117 people and injured over 1,000, experts are issuing new warnings regarding seismic activity in the Izmir region.

Prof. Dr. Hasan Sözbilir, Director of the Dokuz Eylül University Earthquake Research and Application Center, identified several fault lines with the potential to produce earthquakes in the near future, including the Tuzla, Seferihisar, Gülbahçe, and Bergama faults, alongside the existing Izmir fault. He noted that approximately 50 percent of the city's building stock could be considered problematic.

In response to the disaster, the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality and Dokuz Eylül University have initiated an Earthquake Master Plan. This project aims to map building stocks across all districts and assess tsunami risks from submarine faults. Meanwhile, personal stories of resilience emerge, such as Meryem Kaya Öztürk, who lost her 12-year-old son in the disaster and has since become a professional search and rescue worker with the Izmir Fire Department.
