Turkey continues post-earthquake reconstruction and urban transformation

Various reconstruction and urban development efforts are underway across Turkey following the February 6 earthquakes and during ongoing urban transformation projects.

In Kahramanmaraş, the restoration of the 200-year-old Kocabaş Konağı is progressing to preserve its original architectural character. Meanwhile, in the Taşhan bazaar, long-time tailor Mehmet Gündeşli has returned to his shop following post-earthquake renovations, though he notes the decline of traditional craftsmanship.

In Malatya, the reconstruction of the Balaban Çarşı Mosque, which was destroyed in the earthquakes, is approximately 80% complete through local community efforts. However, residents in Hekimhan report that the damaged spire of the Hafız Mosque remains a safety hazard.

In Istanbul, a controlled demolition of a 6-story building in Bahçelievler during an urban transformation project resulted in a partial collapse. Concrete debris struck adjacent buildings, damaging walls and windows. While no injuries were reported due to the prior evacuation of the neighboring apartment, an investigation into the incident has been launched.
