Turkey education costs rise as inflation hits school supplies

Rising costs for school supplies, clothing, and transportation are placing significant financial pressure on families in Turkey. While tuition is free in state schools, the ancillary costs of education have seen a sharp increase. According to TÜİK data, education service inflation reached 53.44% annually, significantly outpacing the general inflation rate of 31.51%.

Estimates for the 2026-2027 academic year suggest that the initial cost of starting school can exceed 81,000 TL, with total annual expenses for some students surpassing 155,000 TL. These costs vary based on location, nutrition, and transportation needs.

Local merchants and citizens report that the surge in prices—up to 50% for certain items—is particularly difficult for retirees and low-income families. Small business owners in the school uniform sector have also noted a decline in business activity as families struggle to afford necessary supplies.
