Turkey: Adviser suggests April 2028 election date for Erdoğan's potential new term
Mehmet Uçum, a presidential adviser to Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has suggested that the 2028 Turkish elections could be held on April 16, 2028. This date is considered symbolic as it marks the anniversary of the constitutional referendum that established the current presidential system.
Under the Turkish constitution, the Parliament can call for early elections if it receives support from 360 out of 600 lawmakers. Currently, the ruling AKP and its nationalist ally MHP hold 326 seats, meaning they would need support from other parties to reach the required threshold. If such a decision is made, it would allow President Erdoğan to run for a new mandate, despite previous indications that 2023 would be his final term.
In a separate development regarding the 'Terror-free Turkey' process, Uçum announced that Abdullah Öcalan will be assigned a role within the Disarmament and Strategic Coordination Sub-Commission. He clarified that a new structure at İmralı is an extension of the existing prison complex intended to facilitate Öcalan's role in the dialogue process aimed at the dissolution of the terrorist organization, rather than a sign of release.
