Turkey electric vehicle market expands amid infrastructure gaps
Turkey is experiencing a rapid shift toward electric mobility, marked by both strategic industry partnerships and a growing gap in infrastructure. Uber and BinBin have announced a strategic collaboration aimed at modernizing the Turkish taxi ecosystem. This partnership intends to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles (EVs) by providing technical support, training, and infrastructure solutions to help licensed taxi drivers reduce operational costs and improve fleet efficiency.
However, the rapid adoption of EVs is outpacing the expansion of charging infrastructure. According to data from the Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK), as of July 2026, there are approximately 464,873 electric vehicles in Turkey, while the number of public charging sockets stands at 46,665. This results in a ratio of roughly one charging socket for every ten electric vehicles. While the number of sockets has increased fivefold over the last three years, the vehicle population has grown 14-fold in the same period.
Despite these infrastructure challenges, the market shows significant momentum. Data from the Automotive Distributors and Mobility Association (ODMD) indicates that between January and July 2026, combined sales of hybrid and electric vehicles reached 259,000 units, surpassing gasoline vehicle sales. This shift is also impacting energy imports, with June 2026 data showing a 24.30% decrease in diesel imports and a 52.55% drop in gasoline exports compared to the previous year.
