Turkey emerges as strategic defense actor in Europe

Turkey is transitioning from a mere arms supplier to a strategic actor in European security, according to reports from the Israeli news outlet Makor Rishon. The country's defense industry has seen rapid growth, with defense exports increasing by 48 percent in 2025, following a 29 percent increase the previous year. Turkey currently ranks 11th in the global arms market, holding a 1.8 percent share.

Ankara's expanding capabilities include the export of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), tanks, armored vehicles, and warships. A notable milestone includes the export of a warship to Romania, marking the first time Turkey has exported a military vessel to an EU and NATO member state.

Turkey is actively strengthening defense ties with several European nations, including Italy, Spain, Romania, and Poland. Specific examples of this growing influence include Baykar's acquisition of Italy's Piaggio Aerospace and its partnership with the Italian defense company Leonardo. Defense Industry President Haluk Görgün stated that the goal is not merely to be viewed as a supplier, but to be recognized as a strategic partner.
