Turkey enhances customs technology to combat smuggling
Turkey's Ministry of Trade is enhancing its anti-smuggling efforts by integrating advanced technologies across land, air, sea, and rail customs gates. According to the 2026 Corporate Financial Status and Expectations Report, the government is prioritizing the National Scanning Systems Project (MİLTAR) to reduce foreign dependency on customs technology.
Key developments in the first half of the year include the installation of a semi-fixed x-ray system at the Habur Customs Gate and a passenger vehicle scanning system at the Gürbulak Customs Gate. At the Sarp Customs Gate, two baggage x-ray systems have become operational, with a tender issued for 10 additional units. Additionally, five baggage x-ray systems were deployed at Gürbulak by the operating entity.
To combat the smuggling of migrants, drugs, and weapons, the Ministry has developed AI-supported software for the Customs Goods and Object Tracking System (GENTSİS). This software analyzes sensor data to provide preliminary analysis for personnel. Furthermore, 20 metal-mineral analysis detectors were acquired for use at airports and scrap metal import sites, and 50,000 drug test kits are slated for distribution to customs administrations.
