Turkey enhances rural wildfire preparedness and equipment distribution
Local authorities in Turkey are implementing measures to improve wildfire preparedness and early intervention capabilities in rural areas.
In Alanya, the municipality has distributed six 3,000-liter water tankers to priority rural neighborhoods, including Çamlıca, Sapadere, İmamlı, Bayırkozağacı, Yeniköy, and Bucak. These motorized tankers are designed to allow for rapid initial response before professional firefighting teams arrive. The selection of these locations was based on risk assessments conducted alongside the Forestry Directorate and Fire Department.
In Elazığ, Fetih Ahmet Biçer has called for increased preventative measures, emphasizing that intervention after a fire starts is insufficient. Biçer advocated for the distribution of firefighting equipment—such as water tankers, extinguishers, and pumps—directly to villages, alongside regular training for local mukhtars and volunteers. He also suggested utilizing advanced technology, including cameras, sensors, and unmanned aerial vehicles, to enhance early warning systems.
