Sapanca Lake faces 25.5 billion lira investment to combat water stress

Turkey has officially entered a state of water stress as usable water per capita has dropped to 1,297 cubic meters, falling below the 1,300 cubic meter threshold. To address this, Agriculture and Forestry Minister İbrahim Yumaklı announced a 25.5 billion lira action plan for the Sapanca Lake basin to be implemented over the next five years.

The plan aims to add approximately 114 million cubic meters of water to the basin annually. This intervention is critical because Sapanca Lake serves as a vital source of drinking and utility water for Kocaeli and Sakarya. If the lake's condition worsens, both provinces face severe water shortages that could impact regional economies and industrial activities.

Climate projections for the basin indicate a 4-degree Celsius temperature increase and a 5 percent decrease in annual rainfall. By 2025, Sapanca Lake is projected to face a water reduction of 72 million cubic meters, with approximately 22 percent of that loss attributed to evaporation.
