Turkey environmental experts focus on wildfire prevention and nuclear plant monitoring

Experts in Turkey are highlighting critical measures to protect biodiversity and manage environmental risks. Professor Murat Türkeş of Boğaziçi University warns that high biomass from excessive rainfall in previous seasons has created a significant fire risk. He emphasizes that cleaning dry grass near roads and residential areas is essential to prevent small sparks from turning into major wildfires during the peak season between July and August.

In a separate environmental development, Professor Ahmet Demirak of Sıtkı Koçman University noted that the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant is implementing advanced environmental monitoring systems. The facility is utilizing high-tech infrastructure, including a seawater treatment plant and a modern chemical analysis laboratory, to establish an ecological memory of the region. These systems track parameters such as seawater temperature, salinity, pH, radioactivity, and plankton populations in alignment with International Atomic Energy Agency principles and European Union environmental legislation.
