Turkey to Require All Hotels, Restaurants and Cafés to Join Deposit Return System by October

Turkey’s Deposit Return System (DOA), overseen by the Environment Agency (TÜÇA), began national integration on 1 July across 81 provinces. Consumers receive 1 TL for each returned aluminium, PET or glass beverage container, and between 1‑5 July the public returned about 7.6 million containers, bringing the registered user base to over 1.3 million.

The system obliges hotels, restaurants and cafés to complete registration through the Deposit Information Management System (DBYS) and select authorised field operators by the end of October, with penalties for non‑compliance. Participating businesses receive a 0.20 TL incentive for each collected container, while the digital platform ensures traceability of collection, transport and verification.

Producer Badem Pınarı has adapted its packaging to meet DOA requirements, joining the first‑phase rollout for 0.33‑, 0.5‑ and 1.5‑litre bottles. Officials aim to boost Turkey’s recycling rate from 13 % in 2013 to 40 % by 2026, targeting the recovery of roughly 25 billion beverage packages annually and contributing an estimated 30 billion TL to the economy. The recovered material is expected to reduce the need for imported raw‑material inputs.
