Turkey expands data center capacity to bolster digital sovereignty

Turkey is significantly expanding its digital infrastructure and data processing capabilities to bolster technological sovereignty and support the growing AI economy.

Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that the TÜRKSAT Data Center, currently under construction in Gölbaşı, Ankara, will cover 35,300 square meters. This facility is expected to increase existing capacity by three times in its first phase and more than eight times in its second phase. The center aims to protect critical public data, including e-Government services, using domestic software and international security standards.

In a separate development, Minister of Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih Kacır stated that Turkey aims to increase its installed data center power to at least 1 gigawatt by 2030. This goal is intended to meet the computational demands of artificial intelligence and increase the country's share in the global digital services market. The expansion is part of a broader national strategy to ensure data is processed and secured within domestic borders to maintain strategic and economic independence.
