Turkey's AFAD launches siren test and emergency preparedness trainings

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) announced a city‑wide siren test in Samsun on 23 July at 14:30 as part of the Ikaz ve Alarm Sistemi (IKAS) installed with defence contractor ASELSAN. Residents were warned not to panic while the system’s sound and a brief announcement were broadcast.

In parallel, AFAD coordinated multiple disaster‑readiness activities across Turkey. Staff in Samsun received hands‑on training for rapid tent deployment and temporary shelters. Underwater search‑and‑rescue drills were held at İbrice Port in Edirne. Volunteer fire‑ and CBRN‑response courses were conducted in Istanbul’s Beylikdüzü district. Darıca’s municipality reported training of over 43 000 citizens and joint planning with the local rescue association. Keçiören municipality offered fire‑safety and disaster‑awareness workshops to 120 municipal employees. Additionally, Çekmeköy district launched a public procurement for personal protection gear, rescue equipment and signage containers to support local emergency units.

These coordinated actions illustrate Turkey’s ongoing effort to enhance civilian and institutional preparedness for natural and man‑made emergencies.
