Turkey observes Public Health Week with nationwide screenings
Turkey is observing Public Health Week from September 3 to 9, with nationwide activities focused on preventive healthcare, early diagnosis, and healthy living. Health Minister Kemal Memişoğlu reported that the country has conducted 158 million chronic disease screenings, 16.1 million free cancer screenings, and successfully identified 14.1 million cases at early stages.
Across various cities, local municipalities and health directorates are hosting events. In Kastamonu and Kütahya, public squares have been transformed into health streets offering free blood pressure, blood sugar, and cancer screenings. In Bursa, awareness walks and festivals for children emphasize nutrition and physical activity. In İzmir, Karabağlar Municipality opened a voluntary counseling and testing center providing free, confidential HIV testing.
Minister Memişoğlu highlighted significant challenges, noting that approximately one in three people in Turkey smokes, contributing to risks of lung cancer, heart attacks, and strokes. To combat addiction, the number of smoking cessation clinics has been increased by 260% to 1,678. The week's theme, ‘Public Health Every Day,’ aims to promote healthy habits from childhood through adulthood.
