Turkey expands renewable energy capacity through wind and hydrogen proposals
New wind energy projects in the Aegean region have commenced ground studies and excavation following environmental approval. The first phase of this wind power initiative is expected to add 400 megawatts of annual clean energy capacity to the grid, which is sufficient to meet the yearly electricity needs of approximately 150,000 households. These investments aim to reduce energy costs for industrial sectors and decrease reliance on fossil fuels.
In a related discussion on energy storage, Professor Dr. İbrahim Dinçer, Chairman of the Hydrogen Technologies Association, has proposed prioritizing hydrogen production at renewable energy sites in Turkey. He noted that while solar and wind power face intermittency issues, hydrogen offers a potential solution for energy storage. However, Dinçer emphasized that the economic viability of hydrogen depends on minimizing energy losses during conversion, managing investment costs, and ensuring clear end-use applications to compete effectively with battery systems.
