Turkey expected years of schooling falls to 16.8 years

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) has released its 2025 data on Expected Years of Schooling (EYS), revealing that the average duration for an individual starting primary school to complete their highest level of education has decreased by 2.4 percent to 16.8 years.

Despite this decline, Turkey’s average remains above the 2024 OECD average of 16.6 years. The data shows a gender gap, with women expected to spend 17.2 years in education compared to 16.3 years for men. The gender equality index has risen to 1.05, indicating a trend favoring women.

Regional disparities are significant. Bayburt and Karabük recorded the highest expected schooling duration at 18.6 years, followed by Istanbul (18.4 years) and Tunceli (18.3 years). Conversely, Şanlıurfa reported the lowest duration at 13.8 years, followed by Şırnak (14.1 years) and Muş (14.3 years).
