Turkey experiences fresh quakes as experts assess Istanbul fault risk

Two tremors of magnitude 2.8 and 3.9 struck the Pınarbaşı district of Kayseri, Turkey, within minutes of each other. Seismologist Dr. Ramazan Demirtaş explained that the shocks occurred on a short fault unrelated to the long‑inactive Sarız fault and warned against speculation about an imminent larger quake.

A separate study by Germany's Geo‑Forschungs‑Zentrum (GFZ) examined the Marmara Sea fault system. Researchers highlighted possible deep‑seated "creep" on the Avcılar and Adalar fault segments, which could release strain without generating a major surface earthquake. Prof. Dr. Osman Bektaş noted that if such silent slip is confirmed, the expected magnitude of a future Istanbul earthquake might stay below magnitude 7. Ongoing GPS, seafloor, and micro‑seismic monitoring is needed to clarify the depth‑locking status of these segments.
