Health Experts Alert Public to Vision Loss and Digital‑Era Cognitive Risks

Eye‑health specialist Prof. Dr. Selçuk Sızmaz warned that distorted straight lines, trouble recognizing faces and other visual anomalies can signal age‑related macular degeneration (AMD). He stressed that AMD, common after age 55, progresses silently and can cause permanent central vision loss if untreated. Major risk factors are age, genetics and smoking, with smoking the only preventable factor. Early diagnosis through routine eye exams and lifestyle measures such as leafy greens, omega‑3‑rich fish and antioxidants can protect vision. Treatments include intra‑ocular drug injections for the wet form and antioxidant vitamins for the dry form, which can slow disease progression.

Psychologist Kerime Begüm Özkaya highlighted that the pandemic‑driven surge in smartphone, tablet and artificial‑intelligence use has made daily tasks easier but also fostered “cognitive laziness”. She warned that over‑reliance on instant digital answers reduces critical thinking, shortens attention spans and can lead to passive information consumption, especially among children and youths. Özkaya urged mindful technology use, regular breaks from screens, and active engagement with information to preserve analytical skills.

Both experts call for public awareness and preventive habits to safeguard visual and mental health in an increasingly digital world.
