Turkey faces challenges in capturing growing Chinese tourism market

The number of Chinese tourists visiting Turkey increased by 28.05% in the first six months of the year compared to the same period last year, reaching 245,000 visitors according to Ministry of Culture and Tourism data. While visa exemptions have boosted interest, industry representatives warn of structural obstacles preventing the market from reaching its full potential.

A meeting held in Istanbul involving officials from the Ministries of Culture and Tourism, Transport, and Environment, alongside representatives from TÜRSAB and TÜROB, highlighted several critical issues. A primary concern is the severe shortage of qualified Chinese-speaking licensed guides, with the number of authorized guides currently below 500. This scarcity has led some agencies to rely on unauthorized guides or English-speaking staff to reduce costs, which may impact service quality.

Other challenges identified by sector experts include agency policies, image barriers, and regional geopolitical developments that limit growth. Despite the high interest in Turkey’s cultural sites, stakeholders emphasize that addressing the shortage of specialized personnel and improving service standards is essential to fully capitalizing on the growing Chinese market.
