Turkey faces diplomatic risks and regional arms race tensions

Turkey faces potential diplomatic and institutional consequences following the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) decision regarding the Kavala case. The ruling, which found Turkey in violation of the European Convention on Human Rights, could lead to actions by the Committee of Ministers, potentially including the termination of Turkey's membership in the Council of Europe.

Simultaneously, regional tensions are escalating due to military developments in the Eastern Mediterranean. Greece and the Republic of Cyprus are increasing their military capacity through investments in Rafale fighter jets, F-35s, frigates, and the ‘Achilles Shield’ system, while strengthening defense partnerships with Israel, France, and the United States.

However, analysts suggest that this arms race may not fundamentally alter the power balance with Turkey, given Turkey's advantages in population, economic strength, and geography. There are warnings that excessive missile procurement by Greece and Cyprus could trigger a permanent arms race rather than ensuring peace in the region.
