Turkey freezes assets of investment firm executives amid fund crisis

Turkish authorities have frozen the assets of executives from several investment companies following a major crisis in the investment fund sector. The crackdown follows an inability by various fund management companies to meet investor redemption requests, which has triggered significant volatility in the Borsa Istanbul stock market.

Justice Minister Akın Gülbilek announced that legal proceedings have been initiated against 25 individuals. Of these, 15 are currently in custody, while 10 remain fugitives. High-profile arrests include Tera Yatirim Menkul Degerler AS President Emre Tezmen and Pusula Holding President Serdar Turhan.

To prevent the unauthorized movement of wealth during the investigation, authorities have restricted asset transfers by board members, authorized signatories, and certain relatives, requiring prosecutorial approval for such transactions. Additionally, regulators have ordered the liquidation of 131 investment funds managed by seven different companies. The Capital Markets Board of Turkey has extended the liquidation period for affected funds from three to six months.
