Turkey faces political shifts and rising retiree economic distress

In Turkey, political and economic tensions are rising as new political movements emerge and retirees struggle with the cost of living. Mehmet Onur Kılıç, leader of the newly formed Cumhuriyet Emek Partisi (Republic Labour Party), has called for a generational shift in politics. Kılıç argues that the current political landscape is dominated by aging figures and that the country requires young, ego-free leadership to address stagnant production and the growing disconnect between the government and the public.

Simultaneously, retirees in Turkey are reporting severe financial distress due to inflation and rising costs. Representatives from Emekli-Sen and various citizens have highlighted the inadequacy of current pension levels, which many claim are insufficient to cover basic necessities such as rent, food, and utilities. With fuel, electricity, and natural gas prices increasing, retirees expressed that current monthly payments are unable to support families or meet the demands of high urban rents.
