Turkey faces rising flood risks due to inadequate stormwater infrastructure
Recent heavy rainfall and flooding in various Turkish cities, including Istanbul, have highlighted the critical need for improved stormwater infrastructure. In the Yalvaç district, the Sel Çayı stream presents a significant flood risk. Although the stream often appears dry or calm during summer months, historical data indicates it was once a much more powerful river used for industrial activities like tanning.
Experts warn that the current state of the stream should not lead to complacency, as surface water from surrounding high elevations can rapidly turn the channel into a dangerous flood zone during extreme weather. The issue is compounded by rapid urbanization, where concrete surfaces, asphalt, and the narrowing of natural riverbeds prevent water from draining effectively. As climate change increases the frequency of intense rainfall, existing drainage systems and manholes face growing pressure to manage sudden surges in water volume.
