Turkey fertility rate hits record low of 1.42

Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz announced that Turkey's total fertility rate fell to 1.42 children per woman in 2025, marking the lowest level in the history of the Republic.

During a meeting of the Population Policies Board, Yılmaz reported that the annual population growth rate has reached 0.5 percent, with the total population standing at 86.092 million. The number of provinces with a fertility rate below 1.50 has increased from four in 2017 to 59 in 2025.

Yılmaz noted that Şanlıurfa is the only province with a fertility rate of 3 or higher, while 76 provinces have rates below 2.1. This demographic shift is also affecting household structures, as the number of single-child households increases while multi-child households decrease.
