Turkey fish market sees abundance and price drops

The Turkish fishing season is experiencing a significant abundance of fish, particularly bonito (palamut), leading to varied market conditions across regions like Kocaeli and the Black Sea.

In Kocaeli, fishmonger Kemal Bineklioğlu noted that fish has become one of the most affordable food options in Turkey. Prices for bonito are reported at 125 TL per piece, while horse mackerel (istavrit) and sardines are priced at 200 TL per kilogram. Other listed prices include bluefish (lüfer) at 450 TL per piece, sea bream (deniz çuprası) at 325 TL per kilogram, and shrimp (karides) at 600 TL per kilogram.

In other areas, the abundance of bonito is even more pronounced. Atıf Malkoç, President of the Union, stated that bonito is so plentiful that it is consuming other species like horse mackerel, bluefish, and even crabs. Due to this surplus, some bonito are being sold for as low as 30 TL to 50 TL per piece. Malkoç emphasized the need to harvest the fish quickly to protect other marine life and urged for increased public fish consumption, noting that Turkey lags behind global averages in per capita fish consumption.
