Turkey fishing season begins with abundance of bonito

Following the end of the fishing ban on September 1, the fishing season has officially begun in Turkey, bringing an abundance of seafood to local markets. In Kuşadası, fishmongers report a significant increase in bonito (palamut) availability.

Bonito is currently being sold for approximately 150 TL per piece, serving as a more economical alternative to red meat, which can cost between 600 and 700 TL per kilogram. Local vendors expect variety to increase as sea temperatures drop, with bluefish (lüfer) and anchovy (hamsi) expected to follow.

As autumn progresses, seasonal availability shifts. While bonito and bluefish are prominent in October, other varieties such as red mullet (barbun), striped red mullet (tekir), and sardines remain available. Anchovies are also beginning to appear on the market, though they typically become oilier and more flavorful as the weather cools further.
