Turkey focuses on earthquake-resistant building and reinforcement

Turkey faces a significant challenge regarding its building stock, with data from the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change indicating that out of 36 million independent units, approximately 6 million are at risk and 2 million require urgent transformation. Given the high cost and time required for reconstruction, engineering-based reinforcement of existing structures is a critical alternative.

Research into earthquake-resistant structures highlights several effective methods. Steel construction is noted for its high flexibility coefficient, allowing it to absorb seismic waves and minimize collapse risks. In reinforced concrete construction, tunnel formwork systems are effective because they create monolithic blocks that minimize destructive torsional movements during tremors.

Other resilient options include wooden frame structures, which benefit from natural flexibility and reduced load on the ground, and buildings utilizing advanced seismic isolation technologies. Experts emphasize that successful earthquake mitigation relies on accurate ground analysis, solid raft foundations, and the correct reinforcement of critical connection points, such as beam-column joints.
