Turkey fuel prices face potential surge as 'eşel-mobil' system ends

The 'eşel-mobil' system, a mechanism used in Turkey to mitigate the impact of rising fuel costs on consumers by adjusting Special Consumption Tax (ÖTV) rates, is scheduled to end on October 1, 2026.

With the termination of this system, gasoline prices are expected to face a significant increase. Industry sources suggest that if no new gradual tariff is implemented, the ÖTV on gasoline could rise from 4.43 TL to the legal limit of 14.83 TL per liter. When including the 20% Value Added Tax (VAT) effect, this could result in a total pump price increase of approximately 12.48 TL per liter.

Diesel prices are also subject to changes, as a new policy has introduced a graduated ÖTV increase of 3 TL per month through the end of the year. While the Ministry of Treasury and Finance has decided not to apply a similar graduated tariff to gasoline, the end of the protective 'eşel-mobil' mechanism leaves gasoline prices more vulnerable to fluctuations in global Brent crude oil prices and domestic exchange rates.
