Turkey heat wave triggers health warnings and public safety measures

Medical experts across Turkey warned that the extreme summer heat poses serious health risks, especially for people over 65. Dr. Cemile Özsürekçi advised drinking at least 2–2.5 L of water daily and avoiding outdoor activities between 11:00 and 16:00 unless essential. Dr. Burak Uzel echoed the need for increased fluid intake, noting that normal requirements are about 30 ml per kilogram of body weight and that diuretic drinks such as tea, coffee and alcohol increase fluid loss.

Heat‑stroke cases have risen sharply, with Elazığ Medilines Hospital reporting 10–15 patients per day. Urologist Dr. Tünkut Doğanca warned that higher temperatures raise the risk of kidney stones and recommended 2.5–3 L of water each day, reduced salt intake and moderate animal‑protein consumption. Pediatric specialist Dr. Nimet Karataş highlighted a surge in summer diarrhoea among children, stressing oral rehydration and that antibiotics should be used only when prescribed.

Local authorities responded with practical actions: Antalya Metropolitan Municipality intensified climate‑control inspections on city buses to keep interiors cool, while vendors at Diyarbakır’s Cuma Pazarı covered stalls with tents after temperatures topped 43 °C to protect produce. In addition, forest‑fire smoke was reported to contain toxic particles that can aggravate chronic respiratory diseases.
