Turkey highlighted for sustainable tourism growth and OECD market expansion

Turkey has been highlighted as a model for sustainable tourism in the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2026 Travel and Tourism Development Index. The report noted that Turkey's score for the economic and social impact of tourism has increased by 8.3% since 2024, marking the second strongest improvement globally. The WEF specifically recognized the national sustainable tourism program launched in 2022, which has led to over 2,000 accommodation facilities obtaining international sustainability certifications.

In addition to sustainability achievements, Turkey's tourism sector shows significant growth. Oya Narin, President of the Turkish Tourism Investors Association (TTYD), reported that between 2019 and 2025, Turkey became the fourth fastest-growing destination among OECD countries, with a 21% increase in international tourist numbers.

Financial data for the first half of 2026 indicates 25.7 million visitors and $25.7 billion in tourism revenue. Key visitor markets included Russia, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Per Narin, nightly spending per tourist has risen from $106 to $109, while foreign visitor nightly spending reached $122. The WEF classifies Turkey among the top 10 emerging tourism economies globally.
