Turkey holiday‑rental scams lure travelers with fake villa listings

Consumer protection groups warn that fraudulent listings on online accommodation platforms are targeting holiday seekers in Turkey. Scammers copy legitimate ads and create counterfeit villa, daily‑home, and summer‑house offers, often displaying five‑star ratings, glossy photos and positive reviews to build trust.

Interested renters are contacted by the impersonated owners, who claim a high platform commission and propose a discount if payment is made outside the service. Victims are then instructed to transfer the full amount to a personal IBAN account. After receiving the money, the scammers disappear, block the victim’s phone number and remove the fraudulent listing, leaving the platform unable to assist.

Industry officials, such as the head of the Real Estate Advisors Association, advise never to pay via private IBAN and to complete reservations only through the official website or app. The Consumer Confederation also recommends using credit‑card payments for built‑in dispute options and reporting suspicious ads to authorities.
