Turkey hosts COP31 summit as Dodge patents EV battery release
Turkey is preparing to host the COP31 climate summit in Antalya from November 9 to 20, 2026. A central goal of the Turkish presidency is to increase the share of electricity in final energy use to 35 percent by 2035. However, experts warn that electrification only aids the climate if the electricity is sourced from clean energy; using coal or gas for charging can negate the benefits.
While Turkey has increased the share of wind and solar in its electricity production from 12 percent in 2020 to 22 percent in 2025, fossil fuels still accounted for 56 percent of its electricity in 2025. The country aims for 47 percent renewable electricity by 2030.
In separate automotive news, FCA US LLC (Dodge) has filed a patent for a ‘High-Voltage Battery Quick Release System For Vehicle’. The system is designed to address thermal incidents in electric vehicles by allowing the high-voltage battery to be mechanically and electrically disconnected via a button. The patent suggests the vehicle could then continue to drive a predetermined distance using the low-voltage battery after the high-voltage pack has been jettisoned.
