Turkey hosts NUSRET-2026 NATO mine warfare exercise
The NUSRET-2026 mine warfare exercise has commenced in Turkey, spanning two maritime locations: the Izmir Gulf and the coast of Ereğli in the Black Sea. Hosted by Turkey, the training involves NATO allies and partner nations to enhance interoperability and mine warfare planning and execution.
The exercise includes approximately 870 personnel, 20 surface vessels, 5 aircraft, and various unmanned systems. Participating naval forces include units from Turkey, Germany, Spain, Italy, and Greece through the NATO Standing Mine Countermeasures Group-2 (SNMCMG-2). Additionally, the Black Sea Mine Countermeasures Group (MCM Black Sea) is operating off the coast of Ereğli.
Rear Admiral Osman Çevik stated that the exercise is a comprehensive annual event designed to improve cooperation between the Turkish Navy and allied forces. The training consists of three phases: force integration and mine laying, sonar-based mine detection, and subsequent operations. Observers from 24 different countries are also present to monitor the drills, which are scheduled to conclude on October 16.
