Turkey Hydrogen Summit convenes in Ankara
The Turkey Hydrogen Summit is being held for the first time in Ankara at Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University. Taking place on October 22-23, the summit brings together representatives from academia, industry, and the public sector to discuss the future of hydrogen technologies, clean energy, sustainability, and sectoral cooperation.
During the event, Abdullah Buğrahan Karaveli, President of the Turkish Energy, Nuclear and Mineral Research Agency (TENMAK), noted that Turkey currently uses 600,000 tons of hydrogen, primarily in the petrochemical, glass, and fertilizer sectors. He explained that current production relies largely on steam methane reforming from natural gas, a process that results in approximately 4 million tons of CO2 emissions annually. Karaveli warned that under current models, emissions could triple to approximately 1.8 million tons by 2035.
Prof. Dr. Ali Cengiz Köseoğlu emphasized that energy security, climate change, and technological independence are central to national strategies. He highlighted that solar energy and hydrogen technologies are complementary, with solar providing clean electricity and hydrogen offering vital opportunities for renewable energy storage and cross-sectoral application.
