Turkey identifies five highest-risk driving routes
A recent study and data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) have identified the five most high-risk driving routes in Turkey due to traffic density, weather conditions, and road characteristics.
According to TÜİK's 2025 road traffic accident statistics, Turkey recorded 1,549,574 accidents, with 288,321 resulting in injury or death. These incidents caused 6,035 fatalities and 403,937 injuries. Data shows that 86.5% of these accidents occurred within residential areas, and the most common driver error was failing to adjust speed to road, weather, and traffic conditions.
The five most dangerous routes identified include:
1. North Marmara Highway: Risks include strong side winds on viaducts and open sections. 2. Bolu Mountain Pass: High risk of fog, heavy snow, and black ice, particularly in winter. 3. TAG Highway (Tarsus-Adana-Gaziantep): Characterized by heavy commercial vehicle traffic and asphalt issues during summer heat. 4. Ankara-Niğde Highway: The long, monotonous stretches can lead to driver fatigue and loss of attention. 5. D-100 Highway (Istanbul): Frequent stop-and-go traffic and sudden lane changes increase accident risks.
