Turkey implements electronic informed consent for medical procedures
A new regulation published in the Official Gazette has introduced electronic informed consent for medical interventions in Turkey. This digital transition applies to major surgical operations, interventional procedures, anesthesia, and sedation, which previously required paper forms and wet signatures.
Patients can now review consent forms and provide their approval through the e-Nabız system. To ensure security, the identity of both the patient and the healthcare professional conducting the information process must be verified. For individuals who face difficulties using digital systems due to health conditions or disabilities, an alternative method is available: they can receive a one-time password (OTP) via their verified mobile phone and provide this code to authorized hospital staff to complete the process.
All electronic consent records will be transferred to the Ministry of Health’s central data registry, allowing citizens to access their consent history via e-Nabız. The regulation emphasizes that the core principles of providing timely, clear, and sufficient information to ensure a patient's free will remain mandatory.
