Turkey implements economic support programs for forest villagers

Forestry authorities in Turkey are implementing various economic support programs aimed at increasing the income and productivity of forest villagers.

In Çorum, the Kargı Forestry Management Directorate provided 4.5 million lira in support through the 2026 ORKÖY social and economic credit program. This includes 1.3 million lira for a tractor for one family and 200,000 lira each for 16 families to purchase log pulling winches. Officials stated these credits aim to increase efficiency, create new job opportunities, and prevent rural migration.

In Mersin, the Mut Forestry Management Directorate is focusing on income-generating afforestation projects, specifically olive tree planting. Following plots distributed to villagers via lottery in 2021, field inspections were conducted to monitor tree development. Officials emphasized that standardizing the production chain from the field to the warehouse is essential for improving the marketability of products and the quality of income for forest villagers.
