Turkey implements new forest fire fighting regulation
The General Directorate of Forestry (OGM) has introduced a new regulation regarding forest fire fighting activities, which has officially entered into force following its publication in the Official Gazette. The regulation aims to increase forest resilience and improve response effectiveness through planned measures and facilities.
Key provisions include strict inspections of harvesting machinery by provincial directorates and law enforcement to ensure the presence of fire extinguishers and water tankers. Failure to comply will result in the suspension of operations. Additionally, local administrative officials are authorized to ban entry to forests during periods of high meteorological fire risk.
The new framework emphasizes technological integration, allowing for the use of satellite systems, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), sensor networks, and artificial intelligence for risk analysis and early warning. During emergencies, fire commanders will manage operations, with senior forest officials coordinating larger-scale incidents. Governors and district governors also hold the authority to mobilize public sector personnel, vehicles, and equipment to support forest management efforts.
