Türkiye implements diesel tax changes and gradual ÖTV increases

A Presidential Decision has been implemented in Türkiye to restructure the Special Consumption Tax (ÖTV) on diesel fuel. Under the new regulation, the ÖTV for diesel is set to zero from August 13 to August 31, 2026. This measure aims to mitigate the impact of rising international oil prices and currency fluctuations on consumers, transporters, and the industrial sector to support disinflation efforts.

Following the temporary zero-tax period, a gradual increase schedule will be applied. The diesel ÖTV will rise by 3 TL per liter each month through the end of the year: 3 TL in September, 6 TL in October, 9 TL in November, and 12 TL in December. By January 1, 2027, the tax is scheduled to reach 13.9006 TL per liter.

Additionally, the 'eşel mobil' mechanism, which previously adjusted taxes based on refinery prices, has been abolished for diesel fuel. However, the system remains unchanged for gasoline and LPG. Despite the tax reduction, fuel prices saw a significant increase on August 14 due to sharp rises in global petroleum markets, with diesel prices rising by approximately 8.89 TL per liter and gasoline by 1.52 TL per liter.
