Turkey implements revenue sharing for forest villagers

The General Directorate of Forestry has introduced a new regulation to distribute up to 10 percent of the net sales revenue from wood-based forest products to villagers working on a unit price basis. This distribution can be made in cash or in kind. The revenue is calculated after deducting production expenses from the total sales of wood-based products obtained within the administrative boundaries of the villager's own village.

To qualify, villagers must meet specific residency and employment criteria. Those registered in the village must have resided there continuously for at least one year, while those registered in other villages must have resided in the target village for at least three continuous years. Additionally, individuals must have worked on at least one forestry activity within their village boundaries under a contract or specification, either on their own account or as a cooperative member.

The regulation aims to support local development, prevent migration from rural to urban areas, encourage return to rural life, and address labor shortages in forestry. Notably, revenue from wood products obtained from burned areas is excluded from this distribution. Furthermore, individuals who have been issued a crime report for forestry offenses during the current year are ineligible for the distribution.
