Turkey implements tiered natural gas tariffs for households

Turkey is implementing a tiered natural gas tariff system that will significantly impact household bills during the winter months. Under this system, consumption is divided into two tiers: Tier 1, which receives higher state support, and Tier 2, which carries a higher cost.

A critical aspect of this policy is that if a household exceeds the monthly consumption limit, the entire month's consumption is billed at the more expensive Tier 2 rate, rather than just the amount exceeding the limit. For example, in Istanbul, the January limit is set at 260.54 cubic meters. Exceeding this by even a small amount can cause a substantial spike in the total bill due to the price difference.

In Zonguldak, the October limit is set at 41.91 cubic meters, with limits increasing through the winter months. BOTAŞ sales prices are listed at 10.625 TL/Sm³ for Tier 1 and 18 TL/Sm³ for Tier 2, representing a 69.4% difference. Final consumer prices will be higher once distribution fees and taxes are added.
