Turkey inflation and rising rents spark worker frustration

High inflation and rising living costs in Turkey have created significant financial pressure for workers, particularly regarding housing. According to TÜİK data, the eight-month inflation rate reached 22.07%, with annual rent increase rates calculated at 31.79%.

In a notable incident highlighting the gap between wages and expenses, an employee named Berkay Alkan requested a salary increase from his employer. The human resources department denied the request, instead offering a benefits package consisting of free coffee and fresh fruit. In response to the offer, Alkan sarcastically asked via message, “Can I pay my rent with bananas?”
