Turkey initiates inspection of 220 wastewater plants for water reuse plan

Turkey has launched field studies for its National Water Reuse Master Plan, which involves inspecting 220 wastewater treatment plants across the country. The initiative, led by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, aims to identify potential for reusing treated urban wastewater in agriculture, industry, and urban areas.

Currently, only 1.3% of treated municipal wastewater in Turkey is reused. The government aims to increase this rate to 11% by 2028 and 15% by 2030. As part of the project, nine facilities in seven pilot regions will undergo feasibility studies, engineering designs, and environmental impact assessments.

In the industrial sector, water efficiency is becoming a critical factor for competitiveness due to climate change and drought risks. With Turkey's per capita available water at approximately 1,300 cubic meters, industry leaders emphasize the need to reduce water loss, decrease consumption per unit of production, and adopt alternative water sources to ensure production continuity and manage operational costs.
