Turkey Insurance Union says location sharing not mandatory for traffic accident claims

Turkey Insurance Union (TSB) President Ahmet Yaşar clarified that requesting the exchange of WhatsApp location data between parties involved in a material‑damage traffic accident is not required by Turkish insurance law. While some insurers use location sharing as an additional tool to verify the accident site and circumstances, it is considered optional and not a compulsory document in the claims process.

Yaşar emphasized that insurers may request other evidence such as incident reports, photographs, fixed‑location data and expert assessments. The absence of a shared location alone does not justify rejecting a claim; insurers can seek alternative information if the accident’s details are unclear. Policyholders may demand a written, reasoned explanation if a claim is denied or delayed. Recent regulatory updates have further standardized expert appointment and damage‑evaluation procedures.
