Turkey investigates organized animal cruelty trade following viral turtle killing video

A viral video showing a woman in Zonguldak Ereğli, identified as 37-year-old Arzu S., killing a turtle by crushing it with her boots has sparked widespread outrage in Turkey. Although investigations indicate the footage was recorded approximately 15 years ago, the suspect was taken into custody and subsequently released.

The incident has highlighted a broader, organized global trade known as the ‘crush fetish,’ where animal cruelty is commodified on digital platforms. Investigations into closed Telegram groups reveal a commercialized network where users pay for videos of animals—including cats, dogs, rabbits, and mice—being killed for sexual gratification.

These dark web-style channels operate with structured pricing, such as $50 for VIP group access, and utilize untraceable payment methods like Bitcoin or international transfers. Evidence from local communications shows high demand within Turkey, with users offering significant sums of money via bank transfers to commission specific videos of animal abuse.
