Turkey Ministry of Justice announces personnel recruitment and crime breakthroughs
Turkey's Ministry of Justice, led by Minister Akın Gürlek, has announced significant developments in judicial operations and crime investigations. The Ministry has initiated a recruitment process for 15,000 new personnel to strengthen the justice system. To enhance specialized investigations, seven new departments have been established within the General Directorate of Criminal Affairs, covering areas such as unsolved crimes, narcotics, organized crime, and terrorism financing.
The Unsolved Crimes Research Department has made notable progress, resolving 40 cold case files involving 46 victims. Recent breakthroughs include the identification of Dilek Kalkan via DNA analysis 12 years after her disappearance and the arrest of a suspect in the 2020 death of 7-year-old Medine Kesmeni.
In the fight against organized crime, authorities arrested İslam Yakut in Istanbul. Yakut is accused of leading a criminal organization responsible for organizing international drug shipments totaling approximately 2 tons of narcotics. Additionally, large-scale operations across 81 provinces targeting organized, narcotic, and economic crimes resulted in the processing of 56,178 suspects, with 25,376 arrests made. The Ministry is also working on a supplementary indictment regarding the ongoing Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) investigation.
