Turkey Justice Minister updates on fund and referee investigations

Turkish Justice Minister Akın Gürlek has provided updates on two major investigations: a financial fund probe and a football referee investigation.

In the fund investigation, which involves allegations of market manipulation and abnormal gains, Gürlek stated that 85 suspects have been arrested and 220 individuals have been processed. Authorities have frozen numerous assets and successfully prevented an attempted $40 million transfer abroad. Five individuals have already returned unjust gains through a voluntary repayment account established by the Savings Deposit Insurance Fund (TMSF). Gürlek emphasized that while returning twice the amount of the loss qualifies as effective repentance, it does not automatically close the legal files.

Regarding the referee investigation, Gürlek explained that the probe began following allegations of official document forgery and mobbing. The investigation is examining claims of preferential match assignments, unfair grading, and irregularities in official exams. Currently, five people are arrested and two are under judicial control. Additionally, separate investigations are looking into allegations of match-fixing and incentive premiums within Turkish football.

In a separate matter, Gürlek addressed the reopened investigation into the 2011 death of former intelligence officer Kaşif Kozinoğlu, noting that investigators are examining potential links to television scripts and examining various evidence to determine the cause of death.
