Turkey Justice Minister calls for new democratic constitution

Turkish Justice Minister Akın Gürlek has called for the creation of a new constitution, arguing that the current 1982 document is no longer sufficient for the country. Speaking at a meeting of the Presidency Legal Policy Board titled ‘Turkey’s New Constitution Agenda’ held at Çankaya Mansion, Gürlek emphasized the need for a legal framework that is pluralistic, free, and entirely prepared by the nation's representatives.

Gürlek criticized the 1982 Constitution, noting it was drafted by a military junta following the September 12, 1980 coup under authoritarian and extraordinary circumstances. He stated that the current constitution lacks legitimacy because it was not developed through a participatory or consensus-based process involving political parties and various social sectors.

Furthermore, the Minister described the existing constitution as a 'patchwork quilt,' suggesting that frequent amendments over the decades have disrupted its systematic integrity and prevented it from effectively resolving societal issues.
