Turkey launches digital portal for 485,000 rare manuscripts

The Presidency of Manuscripts and Rare Works of Turkey (TÜYEK), in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, has launched a digital portal providing international access to 485,000 manuscripts and rare printed works. The platform is described as the world’s largest portal of its kind.

Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy reported that the portal has already attracted over 1.36 million visitors and more than 30,000 members. Statistics show that users have viewed over 5.8 million works, examined more than 15 million pages, and downloaded approximately 1.6 million pages.

The digitization process utilizes high-resolution imaging and international cataloging standards to ensure the works are preserved without damaging their physical integrity. This method aims to protect historical assets from wear and tear caused by frequent handling and potential disasters. The project intends to continue integrating new technologies, including artificial intelligence, to further develop the digital cultural treasury.
